Then, almost to the second (and perhaps actually to the second) the service has gone back down once more.

Try http://www.Powweb.com or http://www.hostmonster.com
use both and must faster and more reliable the 1&1
I lasted a week with 1&1 before dropping them

InfinitelyVirtual.com Exchange Hosting

@angie:
That looks like a very expensive offer when you take into account that only 200mb of storage is provide in the basic package. That’s about one months traffic for me. Most of the other offers provide 2GB as standard.
One to avoid perhaps.

My experience with hostmonster.com is pretty good and I am willing to recommend it. My only complaint is in the second year of service, they charge you a higher price than the promotional $5.95 monthly fee.

I am currently using vpsvillage and I am thinking of moving to another vps hoster soon.

By the way, for a guru like you, I see no reason for you not to choose a cheap vps to host your site. Just my two cents.

it’s not so much my sites (which are hosted on 1&1 and bluehost.com) but my email. i used to run my own exchange server but electricity in our area is not stable.
I use sherweb now but I am in the process of migrating to gmail since it now has an exchange connector.
